The Bicol University became a state university in the Bicol Region on June 21, 1969 via Republic Act 5521. A year after, the integral units of Bicol University were formally organized with the issuance of Resolution No. 1 of its Board of Rehents. The schools and colleges that comprised the nucleus of the university were already of known repute long before their integration as component units of the Bicol University.
The Office of Admissions was created in 1972, by virtue of subsequent issuances of the Board of Regents. Its role as an academic-related support services office is embedded in the university's vision-mission along its mandated functions in instructions, research, extension and production. Its commitment to service is reflected in the university seal, giving highest premium to and sharing in the ideas of scholarship, leadership, service and character as the guiding philosophy in the formation of Bicol University students.
For the past 35 years, the office has served as testing center, ensuring that the selection of incoming students in the pre-school, high school and tertiary levels strictly conform to existing admission and academic related- policies. Given the fluid nature of the curricula and the need to accommodate changes, the office has continually upgraded and revised its screening instrument, utilizing the expertise of home- grown test item writers and statisticians in developing valid, reliable and an updated entrance test for all educational levels. Over the years, such practice has earned for Bicol University more prestige regionally and nationally, with the documented achievements and performance of its students across courses in licensure examinations, regional and national competitions and the like giving testimony to the quality of students the university enrolls and the rigorous academic formation it provides.
More than being responsible for screening potential entrants to the elementary and high school departments and to a breadth of undergraduate degree programs in the tertiary level, the Office of Admissions espouses among others, in the pursuit of its mandate, access and equity, quality and excellence, relevance and responsiveness which are current thrusts of the Commission on Higher Education. It likewise supports the building of a Bicol University community as a place where truth and justice thrive and where the intellectual, spiritual and psychological climate nurture brilliant minds but compassionate hearts ready to transform the world by bringing in what it takes to make a significant difference in their personal and professional lives.
